Our photo shoot took place over on Cherokee Street on Antiques Row. We love the scene and the vibe over on Cherokee. Great shops, bars and restaurants abound. Retro 101/Cherry bomb Vintage always has a fantastic selection of vintage clothing and furniture. https://www.facebook.com/retro101cherrybombvintage/ Stop on by and tell them the Twins sent ya. Ruth's Vintage Clothing at 2001 Cherokee has some amazing finds too. Cherokee Street has always held a special place in my heart because my grandpa, Doc Francka had a dentist office at the corner of Cherokee and Iowa, where Yaqui's now serves up pizza and libations. My mom has always told us stories about the good old days when shops like Woolworths, Neisner's, Kresge (which became K-Mart) and Morris Variety were where it was at. Those places are long gone but a new, diverse generation of people are making Cherokee their own. Suddenly I am craving Mexican food- I'm looking at you,Tower Taco. Anybody want to meet up for a drink at The Whiskey Ring???
I hope you are having a great holiday season and I wish you a very happy and healthy 2017.
Peace,
AnneSadie Hawkins Daytag:www.sadiehawkinsdaystringband.com,2005:Post/43805332016-09-20T14:37:50-05:002017-01-15T21:58:45-06:00WinfieldIf you haven't been to the Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield, KS (held the 3rd weekend in September) you are seriously missing out on some musical goodness! This year was the 45th anniversary of this magical festival and your favorite boys and girls in the SHD String Band were able to hit some licks on Stage 5 during a steamy Saturday afternoon at the Lake. We also did our fair share of campground picking and grinning and reunited with friends from near and far right there in the middle of Kansas. Sadie pal Tim Sullivan of the great Red Headed Strangers even joined us for our Stage 5 set and sat in with us on a gig in town while we were there. This festival is like a big family reunion. So many good people and good times!

Sadie Hawkins Daytag:www.sadiehawkinsdaystringband.com,2005:Post/43285332016-08-17T11:40:00-05:002017-01-15T21:58:45-06:00Havana good time- Sadie Hawkins Day in Cuba!Anne here. I have been wanting to share some details from my once in a lifetime trip to Havana, Cuba that I took back in June. There is so much to tell you about that amazing island. I was very fortunate to travel there with a extraordinary group of Spanish teachers from all around the United States (I teach 5th and 6th grade Spanish as my day job). We learned about Cuban culture and the city of Havana from the amazing teachers at Estudio Sampere in the neighborhood of La Víbora. We had lessons on art, history, religion and MUSIC!! Live music pours out of the restaurants and bars onto the streets of Havana Vieja. We visited two famous jazz clubs, El Gate Tuerto and The Jazz Cafe. We also saw a local superstar named Juan Guillermo at La Casa de la Múscia. Such fun! I danced many a night away with my new Cuban and American friends. One of the highlights of my trip was visiting a school for Dance. The kids performed several outstanding dances for us. They were really special. You could see the joy those kids took in expressing themselves through dance. Now here is where the Sadie part came in: I handed out some Sadie cds and stickers to the kids and I even sang a song for them. Yep, I sang "Twice the Lovin'". And then I explained to them what Sadie Hawkins Day is. One of my traveling companions captured the moment you see below. I think it conveys so much of what I treasure about my trip to Cuba. It was a perfect cultural exchange that I will never forget. Don't be surprised if you someday hear Sadie's take on "Guantanamera."
Safe travels, my friends. Y ¡Suerte!
Anne

Sadie Hawkins Daytag:www.sadiehawkinsdaystringband.com,2005:Post/41835452016-05-16T18:03:37-05:002021-08-21T04:10:59-05:00The Blue MoonThe old-timey train keeps a rollin'! It's Sadie Hawkins Day!Happy February 29th! It is a special day, only coming around every four years. While there is some debate as to whether Sadie Hawkins Day is November 15th or February 29th, we here in the string band are claiming Leap Day as our day! A creation of Al Capp in his "Lil Abner" comic strip, Sadie Hawkins Day turned the tables and encouraged women and girls to take the initiative and ask the man or boy of their choice out on a date or to dance. The idea took hold in 1930s America and Sadie Hawkins Day dances became a time-honored tradition all across the country. Pre-dating the comic strip is the old Irish tradition of St. Bridget's Complaint. Traditionally, on February 29th, women could pop the question to their special lad, skirting the stricter rules of courtship of the time. Legend has it that St. Bridget complained to St. Patrick about women having to wait too long for their men to propose. St. Patrick gave his blessing to the ladies to use this one special day in February every four years to propose.
Times have certainly changed, but we here in the Sadie Hawkins Day String Band reflect on these traditions with a spirit of fun and lightheartedness. Our music and the way we play it honor the people, traditions, and the spirit of past times that had a lot of heart.
source information:
http://lil-abner.com/sadie-hawkins-day/
http://womensissues.about.com/od/womensbodiesminds/f/SadieHawkinsDay.htm

Sadie Hawkins Daytag:www.sadiehawkinsdaystringband.com,2005:Post/40078722016-01-26T08:33:54-06:002017-01-15T21:58:45-06:00Important Public Service AnnouncementSadie Hawkins Daytag:www.sadiehawkinsdaystringband.com,2005:Post/39050902015-10-27T09:58:05-05:002017-01-15T21:58:45-06:00The Last WaltzBefore all of the Holiday shenanigans begin, join your Sadie Hawkins Day String Band friends and a whole slew of other Stag Night All Stars as we continue the pre-Thanksgiving tradition of recreating The Band's glorious Last Waltz. We have had some great things happen in the Sadie camp this Fall. Anne and Colleen wrote a song called "Grade 'A' Fancy" that won the Children's Song Showcase at the Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield, Kansas. It was quite a treat to play on one of the main stages at the festival, which is home to the National Flatpicking Championships. The twins also got to play on the fabled Stage 5 in the Pecan Grove with some of their buddies from St. Louis' own The Redheaded Strangers. We called ourselves Sadie's Strangers. Big shout out to Tim and Maureen Sullivan and Thomas Coriell for the epic jams and all around good times at Winfield. Speaking of our compadre Thomas, you will be seeing more and more of him playing with us. We are thrilled to have him join us on fiddle, mandolin, guitar, jokes, smiles, and good cheer.
